power query - trying to find combine and load on my version

i am trying to create a power query, I have seen how to do it on YouTube. However, I am trying to complete it at work and I believe I might have a different version. At work I have Excel 2016. On my version i cannot not find combine an load functionality.

I can't tell from the screenshot that you have followed the correct steps - and I don't believe you have, sorry.

I strongly encourage you to start again following the steps in the link I gave you.

Combine & load appears when you import from the Data ribbon in Excel, NOT from within the PQ interface.

Just looked again at your screenshot - that looks like Excel 2013, not Excel 2016. In the link I gave you, follow the instructions for Office 2010-2013 (the second tab/link at the top of the instructions).

Re: power query - trying to find combine and load on my version

If you don't get combine dialog on initial query set up window.
Go into Query editor. Remove all but the Content column. You should see double down arrow beside Content header. Click on it. It should give you combine binary dialog.

    What build do you have?

There is a 'Combine binaries' button on the right hand side of the PQ toolbar in your last screenshot.

Yes, Rory, or the OP can click on the double-arrow icon at the top of the content column (as outlined in the instructions for Excel 2010 to 2013 that I suggested he follow).

Re: power query - trying to find combine and load on my version

But you already have "Combine Binaries" step. In your Applied Steps pane.

You can remove it and just hit "insert" when you get that dialog window. It will take you to combine binary dialog.

Looking at the applied steps in the list on the right hand side, it looks like you have already combined the files, but you have then selected the first step in the process so you aren't seeing the end result.

Why are you trying to INSERT a step? It's a warning message, not an error message, so what happens if you ignore it?

It tells you that the file you are trying to import is in the wrong format. Try saving it as an .xlsx file and try again.

Re: power query - trying to find combine and load on my version

Likely issue is that not all files and/or data tables are in same structure.

Or that you have some autofilter applied to data range interfering with the query. Best bet is to upload desensitized sample of workbooks you are trying to combine.

Oh and I see that your file is *.xls format. By chance, was this file exported from 3rd party application?

What could happen is that 3rd party application did not follow proper standard and file could be HTML file masquerading as Excel file.

In those instance, you need special treatment. I posted how to deal with it in this forum sometime ago. Let me see if I can find it...

Those files are not same as your original xls file. And you will not have trouble combining those.

Can you upload original xls file with data desensitized (i.e. Replace sensitive data with generic data of same type)?

Re: power query - trying to find combine and load on my version

    In Excel:

    1. Data ribbon | Get Data | From File | From Folder ...
    2. Browse to the folder - OK - OK.
    3. Combine drop-down at the bottom - select Combine & Load.
    4. In the Combine dialog, click on the Table1 icon under Parameter (on the left) - OK.

    All done.

Re: power query - trying to find combine and load on my version

Also, to add to Ali's post. You generally want Book1.xlsx in different folder than the folder you are querying.

Otherwise, there will be issues. Though you could filter out Book1.xlsx right after "Source" step in query editor.

See attached. Extract contents, then in Book1. Edit the "Source" of SampleFolder query to that of your folder path.

It's not the version - PQ is in 2016 and works exactly the same as 365. This is much more likely to be something to do with your network and security settings, so the next thing to do is talk to your tech team.
