To merge or not to merge

    Hi guys,

    See attached spreadsheet.

I'm making an order form that will eventually have cells locked unless they need editing. Row 6 has has the cells merged where as Row 14 does not.

Is there a good reason in favor of merging as I generally prefer not to? When locking will it be easier to have unmerged cells?

    Thanks Andy

Re: To merge or not to merge

If the header columns are going to be used in any formulae, never use merged cells. Never use merged cells in the body of your data. I would remove all the merged cells below Row 1!! Merged cells are the spawn of Satan and will sneak up behind you and cause serious problems, sooner or later.

You may gather that I don't like merged cells very much!!

    Andy

Why would you need/want to merge the cells in row 6?

    No, none at all.

    I generally prefer not to

Looking at it again you are right as there is nothing in cell B6.

Looks like I've hit a Excel form "pet peeve" there must be some good reasons for merging.

It's not a 'pet peeve' - it's something that you just shouldn't do if the data is going to need analysing and/or manipulating in any way. Glenn has intimated why in his earlier post.

Re: To merge or not to merge

People merge cells for presentation purposes. There's usually plenty of workarounds like removing gridlines or "Center across selection." Ideally, you enter data on one sheet and set up another sheet for presentation purposes.

Re: To merge or not to merge

I think that centre across selection causes more problems than merge.

    What problems?

Is there any REAL need to use either?

    tails1

What problems does center across selection cause?

P.S. While I agree you should never used merged cells when a sheet is being used for calculation/analysis etc. there's (usually) no harm in using them for presentation.
