Formulas Automatically Changing to Values

My brother sent me a spreadsheet in which formulas are automatically changed to values upon pressing Enter or moving to a different cell. This occurs when entering a new formula or editing an existing formula. For example, assume cell A1 is 5 and A2 is 10. If I enter =A1+A2 in cell A3 and press Enter the formula is converted to the number 15.

I assume this must be some kind of setting, but I can't figure it out. Any help is appreciated.

If the formula is not visible in the formula bar, then it sounds like there is some VBA in the background.
