How to check if Excel tab is connected to a dependent tab in workbook?

    Hello,

I am working with a large Excel data file that contains many tabs. Most of the tabs are connected to each other via formulas. I am trying to trim down the size of this file because it is huge and takes a lot of time to open. The file contains many tabs that are obsolete and that I can delete. I'm worried that I will delete a tab that my active sheets are dependent on. So if I delete a certain tab, it may disrupt a formula that one of my active tabs use. My plan is to review the tabs I want to delete and check if those tabs are connected to anything else in my workbook. What is the best way, in Excel 365, to check if a tab is connected to another sheet in the workbook?

    Hi Dan,

A formula pointing to another sheet must have a "!" in the formula. If you use the Ctrl+F (Search) and search the sheet for this character it will stop if/when it is found. If the "!" is in a formula, you can't delete the sheet it is pointing to.

Excel also has other functions on the Functions Tab of Trace Precedents and Trace Dependents which will show if the formula goes off that sheet, which might help with an answer.

On the Home Tab in the Editing Group there is an icon for "Find & Select", where you can select only cells with formulas in them. Then if you click on the Icon for "Watch Window" it will show all those formulas in a list.

Last you can show all formula on a sheet using the "Show Formulas" icon in the "Formulas Auditing" group.

If none of the above helps then a VBA solution might be appropriate for an answer.
One test is worth a thousand opinions.
