    Excel 365 File Management

I am using Excel 365- Windows 10. Like many, I am a long time Windows user and I'm very familiar with the Windows File Explorer; you could say I really like it, but it's mainly because the familiarity I have in using it. I have to say that each I try to access files from Excel, or doing anything file-wise, I am dumbstruck. I always just click on browse, which puts me to a place I am comfortable with. What I want to know is, is there a way to keep Excel 365 from using it's own file access window, and take me straight to Windows File Explorer.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Click on the OneDrive cloud icon in the System Tray at the bottom right of Windows
    Choose Help & Settings
    Choose Settings
    Select the Office tab
Untick the Use Office applications to sync office files

    Hi,

One Drive just happened to be the default drive for my 365 Excel App. Yours is clearly different, nevertheless whatever it is, is it ticked and if so try unticking it.

I'm not sure what you mean, but when I go to file-open, the above is what I see, and so I always have to then click on browse. I don't want to see the above at all.

Now that I've modified my QAT, I can just click on the two icons in the above graphic, and it takes me straight to windows file explorer.

    Re: Excel 365 File Management

I thought you could add the old FileOpen item to your QAT, but apparently not. I've been using the same QAT layout since Excel 2010, which means I've kept the simple FileOpen icon rather than the new & improved (italics meaning sarcasm: experience shows that sarcasm must allways be identified as such) FileOpenUsingBackstage.

There doesn't appear to be any way to opt for the old FileOpen through Excel, so you'd need to start with an .exportedUI file containing the tags

    HTML Code:
I'm attaching a .zip file below which contains such an .exportedUI file. When imported, all it shows in the QAT is that old FileOpen icon. You'd need to supplement with all the other stuff you want.

Yes, it's absolutely a PITA that this level of hacking is necessary to bypass all the unwanted, unnecessary changes MSFT wants to fling at users, but it IS necessary.

    Re: Excel 365 File Management

Thanks for that explanation. As a long time Excel user, I have obviously customized my QAT. I'd like to keep all my current customizations, and just add the ones you provided that will give me the file explorer. It seems to me that if I import your file, I'll have to redo the other customizations. Is there a way to just merge them?

You could make a copy of your own Excel Customizations.exporterUI file, edit the copy with a text editor (ideally one which could insert newlines between > and < so that it's not just one ridiculously long line, nor rely on word wrap), then paste in the 2 tags in my previous response, ensure there isn't another <mso:control idQ="mso:FileOpenUsingBackstage" . . .> tag, save, then load that file in Excel.

OK, I think I got it. What a bunch of utter nonsense to have to go through that to use the normal windows utility of file explorer.
    Thank you for your help.
