Excel stopped formatting cells

My Excel just stopped formatting cells. Even if I select the column and use the format cells command again it does not work. I tried to select one cell and when I chose "format cells" came a dialog box where I could format the font. I am an university professor and use this command a lot to change dates into numbers to grade students by their task delivery date. Can someone help?

Hi - Few questions for you:

Is it just the workbook you are working on or every workbook?
Have you tried closing Excel and reopen it, does it do the same thing?
Does it give an error message? What are you trying to format and how?

Hi Laqa, I understand that your formatting cells utility is not working, I would recommend trying these steps.


1. Select the entire column
2. Select the "Data" tab
3. Press the "Text to Columns" button under "Data Tools"
4. For "Step 1" press "Next"
5. For "Step 2" press "Next"
6. For "Step 3" select "Text" as the "Column data format" and then press "Finish"
7. When you go to check your columns they should all be aligned correctly
