[SOLVED]
The sheet has no VB code in the background.
I enter data in a cell. Then I click to another cell. About 10 seconds later the file closes. When I reopen the file it has the option to recover the previous unsaved file.
?? Any ideas?

No. But...
Is the file full of CPU-intensive formulae?
Is one file affected, or several?
Have you tried TIO TIO? (Turn it off. Turn it on.)

Some cells have conditional formatting.
Only occurs on this file on a particular computer. Opened the file on two other computers, this does not happen. All three computers are running Windows 10 and Office 2016.
Restarting the computer has no effect, it still closes.
Does the problem PC operate with other files OK... is it JUST this ONE that causes problems?
So far this is the only file that has this issue on this computer. Very strange.

Hahaha. Yes. Normally, I like to see sample excel files... but in your case, I think I'll make an exception... just in case.
I thought I had uploaded the file. I apologize.
It is uploaded now.
OK. You have uploaded an xls. I am not going to download that file. Since you have 2010, you should use the xlsx format instead. If you re-save it as an xlsx and STILL have the same problem, then I will open it.
but not before that's done...
I apologize. I was not thinking. The file was saved as a 97-2003 file. I saved as an xlsx, still closes on that computer. I have uploaded the xlsx file.
There's nothing in there that looks in the least bit problematic. I pasted the lot into a new file and gave it a new name. Does it still cause issues?
Solved.
In Excel we went in under FILE>OPTIONS and unchecked the box for AUTOMATICALLY FLASH FILL. Please see uploaded file.
This corrected the issue on the one computer.
On the other two computers it is still checked but no issues. It is odd that it is unique to one computer.
Well, at least it's sorted... and you have the satisfaction of having got there yourself!
