    Question Boxes per pallet help

I was trying to create a spreadsheet that would allow me to incorporate how many flattened boxes will fit on a standard pallet of 48x40 inches. I saw a couple of excel docs for a similar question but the formulas isn't what I was looking for. I basically need to take into account the following criteria

    1. The box size when it is flattened, so it would be just the L x W ( this needs to incorporate the area of the flaps. Once the box is flattened the flaps will take up space.
    2. There can be a 4" inch over hang on the pallets

** For a bonus if there is a way that I can incorporate how many pallets that I can fit on a standard 53' trailer with what was figured out above. Boxes would be stacked to 52" including the height of the pallet ( standard I think is 4 or 6 inches)

I know basic examples of writing formulas, but for some reason my brain is mush when it comes to this .

I would be in someone's debt if they could help or even hop on a ZOOM or TEAMS call to show me.

    Re: Boxes per pallet help

Do you need this for any possible box size, or do you have a specific selection of box sizes to choose from? Do you need to mix box sizes on the same pallet? Do you have the flattened sizes of the boxes, or does the solution need to take the box size and add the flap dimensions?

You will also need to know the flat thickness of each box size to determine the limit of the stack size.

Is the 4" overhang on all 4 sides of the pallet, or do you have to have one side flush for forklift access?

I am not sure this can be done with formulas. It depends on the answers to the above. It may require VBA to iterate through different combinations to optimize loading.

This can get quite complicated. The 4" overlap is only useful if the stacked boxes are stable with the overhang. This is particularly troublesome at the corners. I imagine the OP is expecting the flattened boxes to be rectangular. However this does not have to be the case! Mind you if everything is rectangular and a pallet only has boxes of one size it doesn't get too complicated unless you are trying to achieve and mathematically prove "best fit".
