    Exclamation Help with corrupt file(.xlsx,.xlsm)

    Hi,
Hoping someone can help me with a corrupt file. I was using the workbook fine, but noticed it was a bit slow, so I saved and reopened.
Unfortunately, it now says the file is corrupt and cant be opened after excel attempted to repair.
I recently converted the file into a macro-enabled workbook. But also have the .xlsx file from 2 days ago. That file seems to be corrupt too!
I've sent the file to a different computer to see if it was on my end, but it gave the same answers.
I've tried changing the file to a .zip and running an archive repair and then reopening It still stayed corrupt!
I am on a mac, so the option to see 'previous versions' does not exist.
I am able to open the file in Google sheets....but of course lots of my tables, pivot tables/charts are not what they were.
Can anyone help out? This is incredibly frustrating as its not as if my computer crashed.

I cant seem to attach the files as they are 11mb.....

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Lee

You could try downloading LibreOffice and see if you can open the file with that.

Maybe also try to upload a zipped copy of one of the files.

    Re: Help with corrupt file(.xlsx,.xlsm)

I got Libreoffice. It opens in that. I tried saving it as a seperate file then reopening in excel. Still doesnt work.....Could it be a specific sheet/table thats causing a problem?

With zip compression it gets to 10.3mb, and if I split the zip files I have 3 files!, and I dont think Im allowed to upload zip parts(.z01)

use OneDrive or GoogleDrive (or any similar service) to share this zip file (without login or access by email) and post link to this

Cool Re: Help with corrupt file(.xlsx,.xlsm)

    some data recovered
maybe you'll get more done with LibreOffice

Edit: you'll need to re-create pivots

    Re: Help with corrupt file(.xlsx,.xlsm)

    Yeah I tried Libre Office.
I've tried to Delete certain sheets, saving, then reopening in excel to try and identify if there are any culprits.
With some deleted sheets these are the logs of the repairs excel sent back:
Not sure if I can do anything with this information though....

Oh nice, this is much better than any other recovery program I tried. Looks like just the pivot tables need to be recreated?
Out of curiosity what did you use to get this recovery?

I removed Pivots and PivotCache only so probably the only Pivots should be recreated

    Magic !
I checked inner structure of the xlsx file and testing what was wrong, that's all

forgive my noobness, but "pivots" means the tables? and the Cache's that are associated with them?

    Re: Help with corrupt file(.xlsx,.xlsm)

I don't know another pivot than table
PivotCache is created itself when you create Pivot

    Okay just double checking.
Do you know if there is a way to connect my existing pivot charts to new pivot tables? I've noticed the charts dont have a connection to any data source.

    Re: Help with corrupt file(.xlsx,.xlsm)

Here is how this file can be fixed without having to recreate pivot tables.

    - unzip the .XLSM file in a folder
    - edit xl/pivotCache/pivotCacheDefinition10.xml
    - in it, replace one of the two occurences of cacheField name="Quarters" with cacheField name="QuartersXYZ"
    - rezip the folder as a .XLSM file
    - done!

As to why this occurs is, depending on the Excel version you are running, the application lets two cache fields have the same name even though they are supposed to be unique. Excel thinks this is corrupt and that's it. Cache fields are shared across all pivot tables targeting the same data source and no pivot field renaming in the UI will help because, oddly enough, grouping field items by quarter (or year, ...) is stored at the cache level instead of the pivot table level.
