Fix Value errors for text string longer than 255

I'm trying to count occurrence of unique people, questions and answers. I am using a Countif formula to count combo column. It returns error when text string is longer than 255. Is there a way around this?

If an answer occurs for the first time this formula returns 1, If the same answer occurs for the second time this formula returns 2 and so on.
