Highlighting rows & columns in Excel 2021 for Mac???

We recently bought a 2021 version of Excel, and are having some issues with it. Currently, the main issue is that we can no longer click on a row or column and have just that row or column highlight. Did Microsoft take that feature out??? From what I've been reading, highlighting rows/columns is now an automatic thing, or there has to be some code attached to worksheets to make this happen??? WHAT??? WHY??? IS this TRUE???

Guess I'm going to have to suck it up and learn FileMaker.

    Welcome to the Forum CJBookie!

What do mean by "highlight"? Do you mean you are trying to apply color fill to all the cells in a row or column? Or just select the row or column?
From what I've been reading, highlighting rows/columns is now an automatic thing
I have no idea what you mean by that. What exactly is automatic now that was not automatic before? The one thing you do need code for is to actually change the fill color of cells dynamically for the entire row and column of the cell that is currently selected. But that does not sound like what you are talking about.

What version did you use previously?

Any chance you can show us a screenshot to illustrate the issue you are having? (Any user can attach an image in a post.)

    "
Prior to this version, I could click on the number of the row, or the letter of the column, and that row or column would "highlight" with an outline around the selected row/column.
Now, clicking on the number or letter does nothing.

It appears that one can choose to set the highlighting to be automatic, but it isn't the highlighting of the row or column as previous, it highlights the whole cells.
Prior to 2021 v. we used 2011. That worked just fine for us. More intuitive.

WHY would one have to add code? That should have been done within the software, as it was previously. A stupid step back, if you ask me.

I don't have Excel on my computer, but do have Mac Numbers, which works the way I want it to. It's my husband who is using Excel. But, Numbers acts how we want it to, and how Excel used to act. I attached images of what I'm talking about.

Screenshot 2023-10-10 at 2.29.12 PM.png Notice "highlight" around the cell edges, in row, and column. THIS is what we want, but for it to happen ONLY when we click on the number or letter of the row/column, and only temporarily.

I don't have a Mac but it should work the same way. There has not been any updates that would affect this.

This is what I see when I select a row in Microsoft 365. I have every reason to believe this is what you should see in 2021, but if you aren't, it would be helpful to see a screenshot from your husband's machine. Regrettably, showing a screen shot on a different computer for a different application doesn't help identify the issue.

The thing I was talking about that would require code is this, which is not what you wanted but that wasn't clear from the first post.

I appreciate your responses. I must not be getting through, though.

So, what I showed with the Numbers images is what your version is showing, also. Numbers works, or used to work, very similarly to Excel.

There, theoretically should be no difference between Mac and Windows versions, but apparently there is. When we click on the number, or the letter, of a row or column, NOTHING happens. No highlighting. Why, I haven't a clue.

Taking a screenshot of my husband's computer won't be of help, as nothing happens, and the screenshots I posted show how his previous version of Excel USED to work. Being able to highlight a specific row or column is helpful to the way we work. Apparently, Microsoft doesn't think so.

Not enjoying this version. There are multiple things we could do previously that we are no longer able to do. I don't know if it's because we bought the 2021 version, instead of renting it, or what, but we will NOT subscribe, and much prefer to OWN the software.

I am not getting through either. I don't think what you are seeing has to do with the upgrade to a new version. I suspect there is something else underlying going on. You say NOTHING happens, and I have to believe that something is highlighted. Is the row number or column letter highlighted? What happens if you click on a range of cells instead of a column or row? Are the row and column numbers also highlighted when you do that?

When I say NOTHING happens, that is exactly what happens. We can click on the number of the row, but nothing, NOTHING happens. It doesn't even highlight that cell.

Re: Highlighting rows & columns in Excel 2021 for Mac???

We have a thread for tough problems, and I have posted a link to your question there. We need to engage someone who has the same version of Excel on a Mac.

In the meantime, once you click, even though you don't see anything happen, does Excel otherwise behave like the row or column has been selected? That is, if you hit DELETE the data is deleted, if you click a fill color, the cells are colored, etc.?
