    Strange Power Query Issue

I recently asked in the VBA/Macros section about a code to download the second table of stats from this webpage: https://www.baseball-reference.com/l...pitching.shtml

A kind person wrote a fine solution, but in the thread another another person told me just to use Power Query. He showed me a picture of his results in order to demonstrate

    Screenshot 2024-04-10 082841.png

I tried to achieve the same result using my Power Query. However my results vastly differed!

    Screenshot (4).png

For some odd reason which we could not figure out in the thread, my Power Query simply will not locate the second table from the URL after I post it in the editor. However, as indicated above, the instructor's Power Query was able to pull it up.

I am hoping this is not a problem with my version of Excel, or perhaps it's some setting in options I need to tweak. I'm also hoping there is someone here who really understand Power Query and can help me resolve this issue. Thanks in advance.

What does your Mcode look like? Maybe you should upload your file so it can be investigated.

Hello, Alan. Thanks for responding. Do you want my Excel Spreadsheet uploaded? And where is the Mcode located? Thanks again.

    Re: Strange Power Query Issue

The MCode can be viewed via the Advanced Editor button on the ribbon in the PQ Editor.

But that does not appear to be the issue here. I can see all the tables available.

How EXACTLY (step-by-step) are you going about the web query?

    I did:

    1. Data ribbon > From Web.
    2. Paste URL: https://www.baseball-reference.com/l...pitching.shtml > OK.
    3. Web View reveals 30 HTML tables (including the two you are intersted in).

It looks like you use the Chrome browser - is that your default browser? I wonder if that might be it. I am using Firefox - maybe try a different default browser?

    Re: Strange Power Query Issue

FYI--I use Chrome and Norton Private Browser and I get all tables with both of those. I wonder if your browser is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled or maybe your version of Excel is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled. Your profile indicates you are using XL2021. Is this a desktop version or an on line version of excel? I am using O365 Desktop and I will assume (careful Alan) that Ali is using the same.

Yes, Ali is, Alan! But I don't believe there's an online version of any version other than 365.

Yes, Alan, it is a desktop version. Ali, Firefox yielded the same results. I am using Ublock Origin Addblocker on Chrome. But I removed it. And still the same results.

    @IdabaMalouki
Curious now. Does the same thing happen for you when you select batters?

Also, have you cleared your browser cache lately? Don't really know if this will make a difference or not.

    Re: Strange Power Query Issue

Alan, it does the same thing for batters. I cleared Chrome Cache. I did a complete online repair of Microsoft Office 2021. And it just still won't work! Could the Add Blocker Ublock Origin have something to do with it?

    Re: Strange Power Query Issue

It's AI driven web query. A feature that is still rolling out. Production rollout started on Mar 30.
You can find it in comment section of the article that announced it.

I can confirm I don't have it on mine yet.

    Also it requires MS365 subscription.

Ahhhhhhhh!!!! That's it! Well done and thank you both! Of course they provide that feature to subscribers, and not someone who forked over $350 for the desktop version. I'm old enough to remember when the whole thing was free with Windows

    Re: Strange Power Query Issue

@CK76 Thanks for the news. I guess I should read about the updates more often.

@IdabaMalouki My 365 subscription is $50/year. That gets me 7 years using your $350 which is longer than I have ever waited to upgrade in the past. I think subscription with Beta Channel is the way to go to have the most up to date functionality. Just my opinion.

Is it possible to subscribe with Office 2021 Home and Business or do I have to buy it all over again?

    Re: Strange Power Query Issue

They are different products: what you have is a one-off paymant standalone product, whereas 365 is a subscription product that will alwyays have the most up-to-date functions and features. If you want to be at the cutting edge without having to pay for a new product, then 365 is the way to go. Yes, you have to pay again: a personal subscription (one-user only) will cost around $70 a year; a family subscription (for up to six users) will cost around $100 a year. Of course, you have to continue to subscribe to maintain access to it. It's whatever suits you better, really. If you can make use of the family offering, then that is exceptionally good value, in my view - there are three of us using mine on multiple devices.

Thank you both for taking the time to solve this problem. I will go the subscription route to have all the great features. I must compliment you both on your dedication to this forum. In a world full of takers, it's always quite heartening to find the givers.

That's a very kind thing to say. We do have a fair number of 'takers' here who can't even be bothered to acknowledge the help offered, let alone say 'thanks' for it, so messages like this are very heartening indeed. Glad to have helped.
