Shared Excel File keeps growing........

    Shared Excel File keeps growing........

I have an excel file we are using in a workgroup, and in shared mode. The
problem is that the File has nearly doubled or tripled in size in just the
last 2 weeks. I know we have not input that much data. The file last week was
about 8 megabytes , now it's over 25 megs. The file has many worksheets with
links to other worksheets within the same file but I can't seem to find out
what could be causing the file to grow so much.

    Any Ideas???

    Good evening

    Try this routine:

    BACK UP THE FILE!!!!!

Go to File > Save As Web Page. make sure the Entire Workbook button is selected, type a file name and click save. Close the file and re-open the htm file using Excel. Once it opens resave as an .xls file. I know it's a bit convoluted but you will almost certainly see a reduction in the file size.

The problem may well be to do with XL's notorious difficulty on keeping a track of the "last cell" - once it trips up the file can bloat rapidly, particularly on a shared file that is edited often. Try visiting John Walkenbach's page for a more permanent solution.

Because it is a shared workbook, it is keeping a record of changes that are
made. You can change how much history is maintained:
    Tools>ShareWorkbook>Advanced>Change history settings.
