    Protecting formulas

How do I clear a column of data only without erasing the formulas?
Similarly, I have several sections of subtotals, where the data being
subtotaled is formula driven. Can I protect the subtotal formulas so that I
can paste special values only without pasting over the subtotals?

You must clear the cells from where the formulas are obtaining their basic
values to perform their calculations on.

Click on each formula, then do Tools > Auditing > Trace Precedents, will
show you where those cells are for each formula.
You could then collect them all into a non-contiguious Range, and erase them
all at once, with F5 > choose the rangename > right-click on one of the
    cells > clear contents.

I'm not sure what you're asking. A formula or a subtotal gives a result
based on the contents of one or more cells elsewhere. To clear the column,
you need to delete the data in the other cells.

    Am I missing something ?
