Average of Count in Pivot Table with Grouping

I've created a pivot table from 44,000 rows of data to
count the number of items each day for each store. I've
placed the date in the left column then grouped by day
and year. I've placed the store in the top row. I then
placed the item tracker in the center and set the field
    setting to count.

What I really want to know however is the average count
per day and be able to adjust the date range. The way
I've done it I can create a fomula in an outside cell to
average the counts but if I alter the date range I have
to go back and alter the average formula.

Is there any way to set the pivot table itself up to show
the average of the count each day? I assume it has
something to do with the way I've grouped the days but
    I'm not sure.

    Thanks.

Set the field setting to 'Average'.

won't work -- each item ID is a number. It will give me
the average of the item ID's not the average of the count
    of the item ID's
