Lightbulb Removing filing extension from header

I prepare financial statements that contain between 10 and 30 worksheets. I would name the file "March 31, 2005" and use the file name function in the header to have "March 31, 2005" appear on each worksheet. When I used Excel 2000, the header would read "March 31, 2005". After I upgraded to Excel 2003, the header now reads "March 31, 2005.xls".

Is there any way to remove the .xls extension from the header. I would hate to have to manually enter a date on each worksheet.

    Thanks,

    Marc

Whether the file extension is included in the filename is controlled by a
setting in Windows Explorer: Tools>FolderOptions>View: "Hide extensions of
known file types". If checked, you'll see the .xls extension in both
    WindowsExplorer and Excel headers.

George told you how you could change this setting, but I wouldn't do it.

Lots of viruses (virii) or other malicious junk can masquerade as text/picture
files if you hide the real extension.

    Picturesfromourvacation.jpg
    could really be
    picturesfromourvacation.jpg.exe

Clicking on that executable could be bad.

    Dave:
No argument from me (I hate not seeing extensions), but I figured that if
the OP *used* to see just the filename with no extension, then they are used
to working with this setting checked.

(Still not sure how/if only upgrading Excel changed this Windows setting,
    but...)

Re: Removing filing extension from header

My upgrade to xl2003 included a new PC and WinXP. I'm not sure how that option
is originally set--but I know that if I can't see extensions, it's one of the
    first things I change.
