    default template (book.xlt) doesn't close

In pre-Office 2003 versions of Excel, user-defined default template
(book.xlt) would automatically close when open a file was opened. In Office
    2003, book1.xls stays open. If I remove my book.xlt from the XLSTART11
folder, book1.xls closes when I open a new file. Any suggestions on a work
around to get a user-defined book.xlt to close automatically when a file is
    opened in Excel 2003?

I think you've got some stuff in here that makes it confusing.

If you're actually seeing book1.xls, then look in your XLStart folder (not
XLStart11 folder) for book1.xls. If you find it there, then move it (or delete
    it).

That template file should create a workbook named book1 (no extension).

If you don't find book1.xls in your XLStart folder, use
    windows start button|Search
to look for it. Move it or delete it when you do find it.

And if I open excel, I see book1 and nothing more. If I do a file|open, then
book1 (still no extension) stays open when the other workbook open.

On the other hand, if I double click on a .xls file in windows explorer, book1
(still no extension) does not get created at all).

My guess is that you do have a book1.xls file in one of your XLStart folders and
it's screwing things up for you.

Re: default template (book.xlt) doesn't close

The folder with the template file is Office11/xlstart. I have a file named
    book.xlt in Office11/xlstart. If I delete book.xlt, Excel automatically
closes book1 when I open a file in Excel. If I have a book.xlt file in
Office11/xlstart, Excel leaves book1 open when I open a file in Excel. I
would like to use my book.xlt, but have Excel automatically closes book1 when
I open a file in Excel. Any other suggestions?

I don't think you can change that behavior (leaving book1 open when you
    file|open your other workbook).
