How can you format so you could write x squared using exponents?

    How can you format so you could write x squared using exponents?

    I want to be able to type x squared using exponents, but not with the caret.

    Select a cell and enter:

    'x2

    then in the formula bar highlight only the 2 and pull-down:
    Format > Cells... > and check superscript.

    To format text like x with the exponent of 2 Format>Cells>Number>Custom

    Enter the @ sign followed by ALT + 0178(on the numpad)

    To format numbers use 0 followed by the ALT + 0178
