how to release anchored cell in EXCEL when hitting "esc" fails?

Sometimes when I click on one cell in Excel, the cell is automatically
    anchored.
"Esc" key can not release the anchored cell.
I have to restart the computer to fix it. The problem comes and goes. It is
    very annoying.
Anybody know how to fix this problem?
    Thanks!

By the way, pressing F8 does not solve the problem either.

I just registered. I have the same problem. A cell will automatically become anchored and will not release.
I do not know how to use this system and there appears to be no instructions on how to find my answer.
Anyone know how I can learn to use this service?

What do you see in the status bar... extend or scroll lock

    if none
try to click the center mouse button.
    if extend that's F8
