Years before 1900

I would like to write dates in cells and it is ok with years after 1900. But if I write a year before 1900, Excel doesn't recognise it as a date. even if I use customize format (mmm-yyyy). I used many different format, unfortunately without any success. Can somebody help me with this problem? Thanks.
