    Why oh Why...

does one particular spreadsheet open minimised and accompanied by a new spreadsheet 'Book1.xls'? This only happens when opening from Excel and does not happen if I 'double-click' on the file in Windows Explorer.

If you press Alt/F11 you display the Visual Basic window, in that should be a Project window (or select View, Project Explorer). In the Project window is each open book and each Sheet within that book.

Select (double-click) each sheet in turn and see if any code is present.

Note especially if a Personal.xls is present.

Is there any code in any sheet (especially Workbook) ?

ps, Look - but don't touch (yet)

I have VBA Project (Book 1) and VBA Project (My Worksheet).

I need to delete Book 1.

I don't use VBA and there is no code that I can see.

    Thanks in advance.

For this Worksheet, it is sufficient that there is no code shown there. Do you have a Book1 open?

The problem is that when I open 'My Spreadsheet' it is automatically accompanied by 'Book 1'.

Book 1 opens by default and My Spreadsheet is minimised. If I open My Spreadsheet, Book 1 is then minimised. This only happens if I start Excel first.

If I exit Excel and double-click My Spreadsheet in Windows Explorer then My Spreadsheet opens without Book 1 present.

I have just noticed that if I start Excel and close Book 1 before I open My Spreadsheet then Book 1 does not re-appear.

This problem only happens with this particular spreadsheet and no other. I have been using Excel for some years on a fairly basic level (no Macros or VBA) and this is the first occurance of such an instance.

I do not have a 'My Spreadsheet' icon, not being a great user of 'My ' items so cannot help, but on this PC:

If I open Excel then Book1.xls opens, but if I ignore that book and select File Open or select a file from the 'recent' list then Book1.xls disappears.

If I open a file by double-click (which starts Excel) then Book1.xls does not appear.

If you rightmouse and 'Properties' on the icon that is 'My Spreadsheet' does anything useful show?

Have you saved the file 'My Spreadsheet' as a minimised file? if so it will open minimized.

    ---

If what you have is not the standard default expected from Excel, then, in C:\Documents and Settings\~Username~\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel
is a .xlb file which holds your Excel settings, delete this file and Excel will revert to default settings.

    ---

    Any further clues?

All the spreadsheets I have except this particular one open and replace 'Book1.xls' (closed NOT minimised). This particular spreadsheet stays minimised and 'Book1.xls' stays open. The spreadsheet has been saved as an 'open' spreadsheet (not minimised). If I then click on the minimised spreadsheet, it opens and 'Book1.xls' becomes minimised - it is NOT closed.

This only happens when I start Excel first and only with this particular file.

If I double-click on the offending file (with Excel NOT started) in Windows Explorer, then the file opens normally without 'Book1.xls' being 'attached'.

There seems to be a 'link' present between this file and 'Book1.xls'. I have no idea how it got there. I do not use Macros or VB.

About your rightmouse suggestion. What should I be looking for?

    I hope this helps.

Deleting the .xlb file did not solve the problem.

I agree about the use of 'My...' (must have been a 'typo').

Do you have a Personal.xls file?

If so, and if the file was not intentional on your part, then, with Excel closed, try deleting both the Personal.xls and the .xlb

You appear to have a hidden link somewhere.

I appear not to have a 'personal.xls' file or any other .xls files using personal names or initials.

The file type is .xls. There does not appear to be a link to any other file. If I open from within Windows Explorer I do not get any message asking to link to another file.

I'd like to say something intelligent to help solve this, but nothing springs to mind.

To your "I agree about the use of 'My...' (must have been a 'typo')." - have you tried a 'Save As' to a real area and delete this altogether?

Is there data in "My Spreadsheet" that you need to keep? If so, try this:
With it open, highlight & copy everything in the worksheet, start a new workbook, and paste it. Close My Spreadsheet, save the new workbook under a different name. Close it...see if does the same as the original.

Solved! And I do not have a clue why or how!

As suggested I 'saved as' the file to another file name with no change in the problem.

I then copied and pasted each worksheet in the file (21 of them) to a Book2 with 21 blank sheets. Renamed the Book2 file and each worksheet and then deleted any links to the old filename from which the new file was copied and pasted.

It worked. It opens without 'Book1.xls' tagging along.

However, (there is always an 'however'), the oddity is that the original file (from which I 'copied & pasted) also no longer exhibits the problem, but the file which was generated doing a 'save as' still has the problem.

Thanks to all who helped. It wasn't a serious problem but it was damned annoying.

    Zaga147

P.S. Upon closing down the PC and re-booting, the 'saved-as' file now no longer exhibits the problem! I am beginning to suspect that perhaps I have a corrupted Excel install since Excel, on occasions, does not retain the 'Last Used File' list which I have set to '9'.
