formulas in cell auto formatting as text

I am using Excel 2003 and in one particular worksheet, everytime I try to change an existing formula or link a new one in to a cell, it only registers as text. For example, in cell 'Worksheet1'A1 I want the cell to read 'Worksheet2'c3. I enter = then copy 'Worksheet2'c3 into 'Worksheet1'A1. If I then try to change the c3 to $c$3 the cell displays the formula as text.
I have seen this once before and I can't remember what the fix was. I have tried clearing the contents, reformatting the cell, deleting the cell, deleting the row and anything else I could think of but all to no avail. I would certainly appreciate any help.

    Hi,

    try CTRL ~

or Tools, Options, View and untick Formulas.

Nope, that didn't work. It seems to be one cell that is stuck in the text mode.

    Hi,

    is there a leading '

or is the cell formatted to Text ?

Otherwise, copy another cell to overwrite it and start again.

    No leading '....
    Not formatted to text....
Have tried copying another cell overtop - still the same.

I have been trying to figure this one out for the better part of the day.

    Hi,

Assuming no VB code - can you copy the sheet to a new book, remove any non-public data, then save the new book, and in Explore, rightmouse and Add to Archive, as a .zip and post it here?

    Fixed it!

After my last reply, I opened up an older version of the workbook and copied the cell from that one and pasted it into the newer workbook. That seems to have solved the problem.

This forum has been a HUGE help to me in getting this workbook functioning properly, mostly by using the search function, but this one particular problem was driving me crazy.

Thanks for your help in pointing me in the right direction.

    Hi,

Good to see that it's resolved, but curious as to what it was.

    Thanks for your response.
