    .TXT to .XLS to .TXT

    Hi

I have data in a .txt file that I want to open in excel and manipulate, then save back in .txt format. My problem is that in the original .txt file the text is in quotes like this "text".

When I open the file in excel, work on it, and then save it as 'tab delimited .txt', the numbers are fine but the quotes have dissapeared off the text. The programme I'm using needs the text to be in quotes to recognise it.

Even if I go through in excel and manually put all the quotation marks in the cells it doesn't work because then I get 3 quotation marks at either side of the text when I save it as 'tab delimited .txt' i.e back in the .txt file it looks like this - """text"""

Does anybody know how I can save the file from excel to 'tab delimited .txt' and have the text in just one set of quotation marks?

    Thanks

    Rob

    Hi,

Have you added quotes manually or with concatenation ...?

    Carim,

the original .txt file is exported directly from the programme I am using (Superstress, if you need to know), so the quotes in this file are there already.

They dissappear when I open it up in excel. I tried manually typing the quotes into individual cells, then saving it back to .txt and that is when I end up with 3 quotation marks back in the .txt file.

I hope this answers your question (I'm not quite sure what concatenation means)

    Carim,

I've tried entering =""""&A1&"""" into the cell in excel, and it does display like this - "text"

However when I save it back to tab delimited .txt it becomes - """text""" again.

    Hi again,

Unless SuperStress FAQs cannot give you a tip, take a look at Chip's recommendations ...

    Thumbs up

    Thanks Carim,

I've found that if I set the text qualifier to {none} in the txt import wizard, then the quotes don't disapear in excel. Then I can avoid getting 3 sets of quotes by simply doing select all, copy and paste into notepad, rather than saving the worksheet directly as a .txt file.

    Thanks for your help,

    Rob
