    Interrupting Procedure Without Exiting?

Unfortunately, it's not a macro I am talking about...

Fool that I am, in seeking to use the "Replace All" part of the Cancel and Replace" function, to change a few cells only, I inadvertently executed the command having highlighted one of the cells only.

Not a thing to do where you have 12,000 rows of data with each cell referring to a named range containing the range to be replaced

The result is that I have a loop of excel telling me it can't find the file (with the new "name" in) and inviting me to select it. Each time I use the cancel option it returns a #REF for that particular cell and then repeats the procedure for the next cell.

As usual i have excel files that I have not recently saved, so is there anyway of breaking out of this without closing down excel?

Ctrl/Break should stop the action, (tried ESC?) but it must be active, not waiting for you to answer OK

Otherwise there's good old 'kill' and the ever reliable backup

Thanks for the responses guys, but neither, escape, control break nor closing the file are options.

Excel is waiting for me to select the file in which it can find the "new" name. This appears to have priority and as soon as I select an option (ie cancel) then it wants to know the answer for the next cell, not giving me the opportunity to "interven" with other actions.

I think he's in a 12000 line loop of 'no file'

that's a long time to the end.

You're right. I've decided I have to go for the "kill" option after all. Never mind. The tears will soon dry

it's time like these that you hold the CTRL key and incessantly tap the Break at high speed whilst occasionally responding 'cancel' to the message, Prayer (or power failure) is another good option.

it's also times like this that you really appreciate having just done a backup save of all of your open files
