    database problem in excel

Hi, hopefully somebody who has had a similar problem can help.
I'm using excel 03. I have a database in excel format which I would like to use and convert to csv to put it into outlook.
there are twelve thousand entries in it.

    In every row it reads as such ie;

    [email protected] SMTP [email protected]

I would like to be able to remove the SMTP and anything after that, leaving just the initial email address in the row.
I have other smaller databases of say 200 or so which I just simply manually deleted the SMTP bit etc that didn't take me a long time,
but twelve thousand would take me a weeks work non stop to complete.

Anybody have any suggestions as to how I can remove the SMTP bit etc without it taking me forever?
    any help greatly appreciated

    Try this, in B1

    =HYPERLINK(LEFT(A1,FIND(" ",A1,1)-1))

thanks very much for your reply oldchippy, but I couldn't get this to work.
all that happened is that when I entered it into B1 it came back with an error saying 'a value in the formula is of the wrong data type' it left #VALUE! in the box too...I appreciate any further help you may be able to give

    thanks Dave

OK, let's try this, select the cells, then go to Data > Text to Columns and see if that works

Brilliant,,,, this worked, thanks a lot for your help oldchippy

I selected all the cells in A1 to A12k etc, then Data> text to columns and then it spotted they were delimited. I clicked next and it gave me the option of comma tab space semicolon etc
I checked the space option and then it left the email address in column a, SMTP in column b and the ending email address in column c.

What can I say but thanks very much, you have saved me a lot of time and effort and it is greatly appreciated

    Best Regards
    Dave
