    Permission and Saving Error

    Hi,
Has anyone else encountered this problem??

If a user has only read, write and execution permissions to the folder and they try to save an existing document or spreadsheet in that folder, it saves it and creates a duplicate temp file..

If they have modify access then this isnt the case.

I realise how an excel file saves and it needs the delete permission to do so properly, but it just seems like a weird bug.

    Hi,

    it sounds correct procedure.

To 'save' a file the norm, as I understand computer operation, is to SaveAs Funnyfilename, then on completion of that save delete the original file and Rename Funnyfile to File.

If you take away the Rename option from the User then another name would need to be used.

How would you then go about letting a user edit the spreadsheet, but not giving them access to accidentally delete it, without the creation of the temp file??

no idea, and I probably wouldn't try as most systems allow for a Deleted file to be recovered, whereas an amended file is not always possible. There is also no (safe) method to stop a user from saving a file of empty sheets, or worse, a file where one (only) sheet, or the bottom half of one sheet, is emptied.

Does a 'Shared' workbook require that users have that access on your system?
