Unhappy Crashed computer - Lost VBA

Help! My computer crashed the other day. I have another one now, but I can't find the VBA Modules I had written on the one that crashed. The network folks have my hard drive connected to the network so I still have access to it, but that won't last long.

Where would the file be that has all my Excel VBA scripts? I know I took any default options on where it would go. Plus, once I get it back, how to I put in on my new machine and get it working with Excel again? This is critical and something I won't be able to recreate.

    Please help.

    I'm No Expert, But...

When you say you lost the VBA files, did you have them in your Personal.Xls file?

If so, the path to my personal.xls file is:

Of course, change the [username] to your login username, without the brackets.

This may vary somewhat from one OS to another, but I think this has been a standard path for Win 2000, Win XP, etc.

If your company is like mine, they have a lot of the hidden files and folders that are not visible and they don't allow for changing folder options to view hidden objects...

But just because a folder is not visible doesn't mean you cannot navigate to it manually by typing the path into the Windows Explorer Address Bar. Since Applications do file saving into these folders while you are logged in, they cannot be locked down.

I routinely save a copy of my Personal.xls to a network folder to back it up.

If you have your VBA modules saved as *.bas files, that would be totally up to you as to where you saved them.

    Good Luck...
    Thanks!
    Dennis

I am using Windows 7 and Office 2007, all of my posts are based on this.

    Smile Personal.xls there

Thanks for the help. As I was reading your email the pc tech walked in. Using your reply we were able to find the file and put it were it belongs. All modules I had written were there, and tried running one, which didn't work. Is there anything that needs to be set? Computer rebooted? I had a custome menu set up before. Any directions on how to do that as it was going on over 8 months ago that I wrote these.

    Thx,

Custom Toolbars & Custom Chart Formats

    Similar to previous.

    Path is up one folder

    There are probably two files:
    Excel11.xlb
    XLUSRGAL.XLS

I believe the first one stores custom toolbars and menus, and the second stores chart formats.

These are the three files that I know about that get "customized" when I make changes within Excel.

Have you created a startup file for Excel? It's not a bad idea.

I have a file in the XLStart folder called BOOK.XLT with several tabs formatted the way I use most often.

I don't think you need to do anything except shut Excel down and restart it.
