Excel automatically turning cells to text when modifying formulas! Why?

I am helping a co-worker design some reports in Excel and I noticed a very strange problem.

When I modify formulas and hit "enter" the cell format is turned to text (making the formula useless) and I cannot change it back without using "Text-to-Columns".

Example, I made a vlookup formula that was referencing another workbook, and then noticed that I returned the wrong column #. When I went to edit the formula and change the reference column from 5 to 4 the cell became text when I was finished. This happens all the time to her, she just thought it was normal for Excel.

Anyone know what the problem is?

I'm not an Expert (like many here)

But... Where is she getting the original workbook? I get a lot of workbooks from our electrical utility and the entire workbook is formatted as text. I don't know if this is because they are importing from a db or some form of dilineated text files.

Unfortunately just selecting all cells and formatting back to general doesn't seem to change the "text" in the cell. Clicking to "edit" the cell and then hitting <Enter> changes the text to numerical or formula etc.

Does she have a workbook saved in her

that is acting as a startup file? If so, might some formatting be set to text?
    Thanks!
