Ticks in the cell corners

In some of my cells I see a little triangle in the upper left corner what does this mean and how does it get there? Formula??

Similarly in a friends excel97 spreadsheet I see a simalar little triangle in the upper right corner. Is this seen in excel 2003 also and what does it mean and how does it get there? Remark??
