Character count in a cell

Hello - I continue to exceed the 255 character limit in my cells when documenting my work. Once combined with MS Access data, my comments are cut off due to the limits. Is there a tool that will enable me to count the number of characters that I have used in my cell so that I can consolodate my comments to ensure I do not exceed the 255 character limit?

=LEN(A1)

to return the number of characters used in cell A1 - amend as appropriate.

I tried to enter this formula into my cell but nothing happened. What am I doing wrong? I just want to be able to count the number of characters of the 255 available that I have already used in my cell.

What happened when you entered the formula? If you saw =A1 still in your cell, then maybe you have the cell formatted to text (go Format>Cells>Number tab and choose "General" and then re-enter the formula).

I figured it out. Thanks very much. I was inputting the formula in the wrong location. I appreciate the help.
