Paste Special is not working properly.

I have a file in Excel that I imported as a CSV file. I tried copying formatting from a previous report and using paste special to apply it to the new report (I have done this plenty of times with this repor). Now, this a different dialog opens up when I choose paste special.

    Any ideas?

Typically I only get that message if I am copying and pasting from a non-Excel File, e.g. Word to Excel or a CSV file. What format (CSV? txt? XLS) is your report in that you are copying from?

The report started out as a CSV file, but I saved it as an XLS file. Also, I have done this before (I import this file bi-weekly), and this is the first time I have gotten that dialog box.

    BigBas,

I'm not 100% positive, but I think this screen shows up when you try to copy and paste between Excel sheets that are running as separate Excel.exe processes. If both sheets were running under the same executable, you'd get the standard PasteSpecial menu.

This 'different' menu, as stated, also appears when copying from applications other than Excel into Excel. With two instances of Excel.exe, one is simply treating the other as an outside application.

Weird, I'd try a couple of experiments (I am a chemist after all).

Paste a different or sub range and see how that works. (If it works, try expanding or moving the range until it stops working)

Save it under a different name, then try it.

Copy the worksheet into your active workbook and copy and paste special from there.

    Basically, I'm baffled.

    Paul:

You were absolutely correct. I apparently had multiple instances of Excel open. Now, it is working fine. As usual, good work and thank you.
