    Excel will not open spreadsheets

unless the program is open and you use the open file tab. I have already taken it to a "professional" and he could not firure it out. He even installed excel 2007 it still doesn't work.
If you could help this computer is needed in an office and the person who uses it doesn't understand how to find files from the open tab in excel. Everything is on her desktop.
    Thanks in advance

Is it a problem in which the computer doesn't know what program to open the file with? (Does the 'Windows cannot open this file.... select a program from the list' pop-up appear after double-clicking any Excel file?)

If so, you just need to tell Windows what program to open that file type (.xls, .xlsx, .xlsm, .xlsb, .xlst, etc.)

If not, try to provide a bit more information on any errors or whatever you can. It may be difficult to troubleshoot a PC issue without being able to see it, though.

    re excel won't open spreadsheets

Sorry I haven't had to do this for a while forgot the protocols.
I am running windows xp it had the old version of excel on it. The pro that I took it to installed excel 2003 (not 2007 that was a typo) with no results.
    Here is what it does.
It will open excel but will not open the spreadsheet. There is no error message.
The problem started with her outlook not being able to open excel files attached.
    any ideas
    thanks for the help

Hi dj, I think this Microsoft KB article might be the issue at hand:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304424

It pertains to Office (Excel) 2000, however it could just as easily be for Excel 2003. In steps 9 and 12, when searching for the registry keys, look for "11.0" instead of "9.0" at the end.

    Excel 8.0 = Excel 97
    Excel 9.0 = Excel 2000
    Excel 10.0 = Excel XP (2002)
    Excel 11.0 = Excel 2003
    Excel 12.0 = Excel 2007
