Auto fill blank cells with data in a cell above

I have a spreadsheet that i need to filter for a user name. The problem is that the User name appears on the first record but not on the records underneath; so if i filter i only get the record with the name against it. I am sure that Excel has a function that lets you copy the column then special paste the data in such a way that blank cells are automatically filled with the data held on the cell directly above. Hope this makes sense! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Asssuming your student name is in column A, In a blank column starting in row 2

and drag down.

Then copy that column over to column A with Paste Special>Values.
