Excel screen too large for monitor

For some reason, the top band is missing when I open an Excel file. (This is the band that identifies Excel and also has the three buttons on the right for minimize, the double boxes for resizing for more than one program and the exit button.) This only happens when I open Excel. Any other Microsoft program opens up as normal. Does anyone know of a solution other than shrinking the picture on the monitor? (That only causes a black frame around all the other programs.) Thanks for your help

Have you installed any addins or opened a workbook that might contain code to hide this?
    Hope that helps.

Are you sure that the band is still there and off the screen, or is it gone completely?

To check if the band is still there, you can press ALT then SPACE. That will open a dialog box with options like MOVE, MAXIMIZE, MINIMIZE, CLOSE, etc. Try to maximize it. If you still don't see the band, then it has been removed (likely by a program, as Roy suggested).

Are you in full screen mode?

Go to View > Full screen and you can toggle between normal and full screen.
