Creating a authorisation tracker - any ideas?

I need to somehow think of a better way to track levels of authorisation, for example the capital request process involves about 6 levels of authorisations, each with 4 or 5 people in each level.

I would like to track the approvals i receive from each person and then be able to present at any given time the status of approval progress.

Currently this is a manual spreadsheet that i have inheritied that is ugly.

But wondering if anyone has some good ideas of how to better present this information and maybe track it?
I doubt there is going to automation, but mainly on how to present and easily maintain.

We are going to be using Sharepoint at some stage, which apaprently uses document flow tracking - so need something as an interim.

Any ideas? or just stick with what i have (which is essential a list of projects and a column for each person!)
