Simple formula construction and conditional formatting?

    Hi everyone.

This is my first post so apologies if it is difficult to understand. I know what I would like to know but wording it is difficult.

I have used Excel for a number of years and have gotten on ok on my own working out simple formulas myself but I have been stuck on this one for a while.

Is it possible to enter a value into a cell and have a predefined formula that works with the data that I enter??

I would like to enter a value between 1-10 and the cell then takes this number and multiplies it by a value in another cell.

    Eg.
    I have a cell that displays £10 (let's say D6)
In another cell I enter 8
I would then like the cell to do the formula =8*D6 automatically, as this value can be different each time (1-10)

    Next Q:

I would like any - figures ro appear in red automatically.

    Many thanks

    Hi djt,

Welcome to the forum, please take time to read the rules and change the title to your question to something more meaningful. (OK you did it before I posted back - well done)
    To answer your questions

    1.
    =8*D6
replace 8 with the cell reference where 8 is located i.e =E6*D6

    2. Right cilck on the cell, Format cells > Font > on the colour drop-down pick red

    See you again soon!

You can have a formula in another cell to do just that, something like this:
in D6 £10, in E6 8 and in F6 =D6*E6, for the colouring choose your cell then from the menu bar choose Format, Conditional Formatting, the box should display Cell Value Is then change the one next to it to say Not Equal To then in the third type 0 then click the format button and choose your font colour or styling!

I have changed your title for you on this occassion but please try to be more descriptive in future

Format the result cells with a custom format to display the negative values in red:

select the cells and go: Format>Cells>Number tab of the dialog that will open. Click Custom in the left hand Category list and in the right-hand list pick the value that looks like:

    #,##0;[Red]-#,##0

    Best regards

    Richard
