I need Help - Forumla or Function ?

    Hi,

    I am new to excel.....

I have a sheet with multiple columns and I need a count.

However, my count needs to be based upon the dates.

So column B has dates and column F has data values.....

I'd like to have a summary sheet that would say something like....

    07/25/2008 X apples X peaches X grapes X oranges
    07/26/2008 X apples X peaches X grapes X oranges

Each day might have no apples or oranges but in any event they count of each will vary by day.

I'm not quite sure how to pull this off... any help would be great....

I can do a countif to get the total but cannot get it narrowed down by day....

    Hi & Welcome to ExcelForum!

Have you used pivot tables before? They were designed just for this kind of analysis - take a look here:

I've been playing with the pivot table and can get it created but the count is not showing...
so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong... seems this is the right way to get to what I want but it's just not working for me.

Your pivot table data source range needs to span at least columns B:F (B has date, F has data). Then you need to drag the field name of column B (probably 'Date') into the row area of the pivot table. You need to drag the col F data header (let's call it 'data') into both the column area of the pivot table and the data area as well. This should create the Pivot table you need.

Ok. I think I may be close now....

I have the pivot set so my dates are on the left and X data across the top.

HOwever, nothing is calculating and I think it's because the data that I want the count on is not numeric.

It's text. I.e. apples, oranges, etc.
