    Grouping an age range

    Hi,

I know I'm being really thick but could someone help me out with a formula, please?

Column A contains the ages of a (large) group of people. I need to count the number in different age ranges e. g. number between 16 - 20; 21 - 30; 31 - 40 etc.

I've tried countif, sumif and others and I'm sure it's not a hard thing to do ... unless you're as thick as I am!

Many thanks for your time and trouble

Tony (y_not backwards ... seems appropriate!)

    Hey Tony,

I attached examples of solving your problem using COUNTIF and SUMPRODUCT. I think the SUMPRODUCT example is simplier to work with but it's up to you. Take a look and if there are any questions, post away.

    Grouping an age range

    With age values in A2:A100

    Here's one approach:

    B1: (start of range.....eg 16)
    C1: (end of range......eg 20)

This formula returns the count of ages between those values, inclusive:

    Smile Many thanks guys

    Many thanks for the replies.

ChemistB, I will use the sumproduct option (thanks very much) as I understand this.

Ron, I like the formula used for your response, I've never used frequency or index so, while I'll use ChemistB's option to solve the immediate problem I will have a closer look at your formula and try to understand how that works.

    Many thanks again.

    Regards

    Tony
