Automatically generate numbers

I have a sheet on to which I have imported 11,000 + records my next task is to number each entry
1 to 11,000 is there an auto method of doing this or will I have to type each one ?

You can use the fill handle

Enter 1 in first cell > 2 in next cell then highlight and use the fill handle to drag down (or double click depending on set up of sheet)

or enter 1 in the first cell > select it then from the edit menu > fill >series > by column

Depending on the version, most people have at least xl2003.
start entering 3 or 4 numbers
select the last number and double click on the fill handle(that's the black box in the bottom corner of the cell),another box will appear,click the box and select "fill series"
