If you move it from Explorer, yes.
If you open both files, then save the linked file to the network drive from Excel, you're golden.
Hi Welshman,
Not to sound unhelpful, but have you tried it? Create a backup copy of your sheet and give it a shot. I'm sure you'll have your answer within minutes.
Is that something particular to network drives Shg? It works fine on a local host because the formulas are saved down with a relative path (so if the files are both in the same folder, it shouldn't make any difference).
Richard
No Richard, but I should have read the post more carefully. I don't know what the result is of moving the whole folder (haven't tried). Is that something particular to network drives Shg?
My point was that Excel will amend the path to where the linked workbook gets stored. That's why the path disappears in the linking workbook when the linked worbook is open, and changes back to include the path when the linked workbook is saved.
I dunno about that. If you move the linking workbook, the formulas will remain correct, which would not be true if the path were stored relative to itself. It works fine on a local host because the formulas are saved down with a relative path (so if the files are both in the same folder, it shouldn't make any difference).
If other people are also using the workbook, you might check to see if different drive mappings cause a problem.
