How do I sum up numbers connected to repeating names?

I guess I will start with the fact I am in a Business Statistics course. I wish it was a normal class but distance learning is pretty much all the college offers anymore in the subject.

Anyway I have an excel assignment that has about 4000 orders for wood. I am suposed to find the company that ordered the most wood and of what kind. I am really at a loss for how to do this and have combed over my book quite afew times trying to figure it out. However it has little if any excel info and nor does the CD that came with it outside of how to install data analysis tools. I figure I need to find a way to get excel to combine the numbers together for orders from the same company but after trying for afew hours I have gotten no where. Any idea how to do this?

Most people here will not do homework -- I would advise you look at 3 things in Help files (and online)

    1 - SUMIF function
    2 - MAX function

    3 - Pivot Tables

The third is more of an all encompassing solution I suspect your course is expecting you to utilise 1 & 2.

re: How do I sum up numbers connected to repeating names?

You're lucky this is a simple question and although I agree with the previous remark I'll help you out. Suppose your table looks like this
    Date Company Type Amount Value
    04/10/2008 F Cedar 4 100
    05/10/2008 F Ash 5 125
    07/10/2008 A Maple 3 75
    07/10/2008 B Pine 4 100
    08/10/2008 F Pine 4 100

Then select the complete table and make a PIVOT Table where Company goes into the Rows Field, Type Goes into the Column Field and Amound as well as value goes into the data items field

Good luck with the rest of you're home work and next time do not mention it's homework
Looking for great solutions but hate waiting?

I didn't figure it would be a big deal if it was homework or not. Since I am not posting up the excel sheet asking someone to do it for me. Just asking for a method to do it since obviously my book does not cover excel very well. Thanks for the help.
