Red face count cell value contingent on other cell conditions

    Hi

I have to count cells contingent on names that may be in diferent rows and colums. Viz

    a c g k o s w
    John 3 3 Peter 2 1
    Alex 2 1 Alex 1 3 2
    Peter 3 2 John 2 2 1

    Name total
    John
    Alex
    Peter

I want to be able to count all of Johns, Peters, and Alex's seperately and put them in the total box (so the total cell for John will add 3+3+2+2+1) and similarly the same for peter and Alex.

Can you please help with a formula or will it require a macro. The format cannot be changed otherwise I would have John a fixed row as with Alex and Peter.

    Many thanks in anticipation

    Gerry

Re Counting contingent on other cells

    Hi SGLife
Just to let you know that it does work but yes you are right there hopefully is an easier way as I have 20 names spread over 30 columns !!!!!

If anyone has an easier answer it would be appreciated. I am however very appreciative of SG's answer.

The names in a and k and also in some other colums are the names of service users that need supprted by other staff whose names are also in columns. I have sorted out the times and number of hoursthat they are supported and this determines their session values ie if they get 4 hours support that is 1 session; if they get 8 hours that is two sessions. I am counting all the sessions and subtracting from an original allocation. The problem is that I can't allocate specific rows for each client therefore the cell that calculates the number of sessions needs to be able to identify the cells that have the sessions for each service user and as stated the service user may have their name on different rows. Hope I haven't complicated it further. In other words I am asking find and total all of the sessions for each person supported.

    Many thanks again

Is it possible to attach a sample spreadsheet (remove confidentiality) and show a sample expected result?
