    How to insert numbers in one cell w/o adding, then add the numbers in another cell?

    Hey everyone, I am quite new to Excel.
    The problem that I am having is that I want two boxes with information. One is supposed to show exactly how I got the number in the second box.
    Ex: First box = 10+30+12...I want it to show exactly that. In this case, the second box is supposed to show 52. Can someone please help me out?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

    To prevent excel calculating anything starting with an equal sign, precede it with an apostrophe. ie

    '=10+32+12
    Rule 1: Never merge cells
    Rule 2: See rule 1

    You can also use Ctrl + ` (the one left of '1' and above 'Tab') to flip between showing formulae and their results. It can look pretty gruesome first time you try it, but don't be intimidated!

    Thanks sweep and CC for the help...however, that is not exactly what I need.
    I need to print out the Excel Sheet with the data. First I tried putting '123+24+9' in cell B4. Then I tried putting =SUM(B4). However, I got 0 for the value. Then I tried using '=123+24+9' However, that also didn't work. I hope you understand the problem if you didn't understand completely before.
    Thanks for the help in advance.

    Put the same formula into both cells, one with the ' in front (which will show the formula) and one without (which will perform the calculation).

    HTH

    PS what you have done is told Excel to consider your formula as a string (i.e. some words) by putting the ' at the front, by putting sum(B4) you then asked it to add the words up... words = 0 in sums.
