Numbers with periods

Greetings everyone. I'm a rookie with Excel 2007 and I'm attempting to create a worksheet that involves a list of tasks, I'd like to number these tasks:
1.
2.
3.
etc.

However, the period disappears when I try to place it behind a number in a cell. How can I correct this?

Format the cell using the custom format, and enter the format string #. that's the hash sign with a dot
