    Removing Auto-formatting

Hey everyone, here's the hot topic of the day: I want to completely remove auto-formatting. yes, it's a powerful tool for you to use if you're not using anything else, but I'm a programmer, not an accountant: automatically formatting information in my excel files is *not*, repeat, *NOT* something I ever want to happen, *ever*. A lot of my work goes to formatting data before it gets to excel and I don't like having that work undone.

how, how, HOW do I get rid of this? it seems to be the single *most* frequently asked question on the internet and everybody keeps pushing the 'select the cells you want to format differently and label them as text'. I don't want to save things as text a hundred times a day, I want no formatting. if I wanted text, I wouldn't even bother using excel- I'd use notepad.

thanks in advance to anybody who can shed some light on this.

what format do you want then?
    you've lost me!
text has no format as such just shows exactly what you put in cell.
so what bit of auto formatting do to want to turn off?
i.e what is it thats going wrong?

WinteE- Thank you very much! I will give that a try.

martindwilson- I do want the plain text format. if it needs to be something besides plain text, it will need to be that outside of excel, and I can read it out as whatever it needs to be.

    Re: Removing Auto-formatting

if you select the whole sheet then format as text wont that do it?
    or
you could create a xlt template and use that
    see
    http://www.ehow.com/how_13117_create...-template.html
probably best to add a few sheets for use, because even tho its default on open is text new sheets default to general
