How to control routing of Elbow Connector?

I'm trying to use Elbow connectors (in Excel 2003) to show how one row of a spreadsheet is re-directed to another. I want the connector to run horizontally for a short bit, then go vertically for a longer span to another row, then have a short horizontal segment with an arrow pointing into the new row.

When I place the elbow connector in a more vertical aspect ratio, it configures itself to have a long vertical run, a short horizontal run, then a long vertical run. This doesn't work since "ends" that are supposed to show the connection to spreadsheet rows are vertical.

How can I configure the elbow connector to remain in the horizontal-vertical-horizontal configuration regardless of the aspect ratio of the endpoints? Format Autoshape offers no help. Rotation is grayed out.

What you need is a right brack rather than an elbow.

This code will add and format a bracket between 2 cells.

    Andy,

Thanks for the macro code. It works, but the shape is not what I'm looking for. It goes right, down, left. (like the "]" character). I want a shape that goes right, down, right. (More like a "Z" with the diagonal stroke straightened)

Here is an ASCII version of the shape I'm trying to get:

    --
    |
    |
    |
    |
    |
    -->

Can a bracket be adjusted to have one end point left of the vertical while the the other end points right?

I see what you mean now.

The direction of the horizontal/vertical line is dependent upon the ratio of the H/V lengths. If you make the shape wide enough the lines will flip.

    Try using a freeform shape.

    Thanks Andy,
That does the trick exactly. Actually, now that I know it is built from Freeform, I see that the Freeform can be entered interactively from the Autoshapes Lines menu. When I looked at that menu, the icon appears to be a curved shape, so I thought it was only able to draw freeform curves. But does provide straight line segments, which is perfect.

If you release the mouse between points when using freeform you will get the straight lines. If you keep the mouse button pressed it acts more like the scribble tool.

There is a way to achieve the desired result using the standard elbow connector. If you draw the connector across a row boundary (for horizontal arrows) or across a column boundary (for vertical arrows), and then insert rows or columns in the middle of the shape, Excel will extend the connector, leaving you with the shape the OP is looking to create, with an elongated central section.

How to control routing of Elbow Connector?

The trick I use is to put a shape, like a filled circle, at the start and finish point. Set the size of the circle so it's just a dot. You can make one then just copy and paste...
Then I use the elbow connectors and attach the ends to the dots. Excel will automatically try to connect to the dots. You can control the direction of attachment by moving the mouse around near the dot.
After you attach you can drag the horizontal and vertical parts of the connector to how you want and it will behave quite nicely.

Thanks. It worked. I just increased the column width and reduced it back.
