Is the link to a file? If so, sounds like that file type isn't associated to a particular program. To test this...try manually opening the file (not via the link). If you can't...simple fix.
Right click start -> Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File type
Find the file extension you are having problems with and then identify what program the file should be opened with (ie...the file type .xls would be opened with excel - file type .doc would be opened with msword)

Hi,
What's the file extension that the link is trying to open? It sounds like a file type that is not registered in your system. All common file types, .doc, .xls, .pdf, .txt etc are probably defaulted, but not this one, and you need to associate a program with the file type.
In Windows Vista
1. Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.
2. Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click
Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.
3. Click the program that you want to use to open this file.
4. Do one of the following:
It will be similar for XP.
