excel 2007 doesn't recognize the formula as a formula

This only happens when working in a .xls export from Quickbooks saved as 97-2003 in Excel 2007. (never happened in 2000)

when typing direct or using the function wizard Excel 2007 displays the formula as text instead of displaying the result.

the only way to get around it is to enter something simple like =2+2 into the cell then edit that formula to the function you really want.
Formatting the cell to number doesn't do it. Pasting the format from a numeric cell doesn't do it.

(It's not as simple as clicking "Show Formulas")

    any ideas?

Can't say I've used Quickbooks, but if you see a formula in a cell and it's not working correctly,

Set the cell format to General (or number, etc.), then select the cell (double-click or F2) and then press Enter. That should convert it to the new format.

An alternative is to highlight the cells/columns -> Data -> Text to Columns -> Finish
