Number Changes When Copied and Pasted

Hello. My wife, who has a pretty good handle on Excel, asked me to seek help for a problem she's having. In Excel 2000 on a particular worksheet, when she cuts or copies a number from one cell and pastes it into a different cell on the same worksheet, the content changes. For example, if she selects and copies the number 13993020, when she pastes it into another cell on the same worksheet, she gets 1.4E+07.

The formats for both the source and target cells are "general," and there are no formulas associated with either cell.

Also, although the content in the cell has changed, the window at the top of the screen that shows the cell's content shows the original number (e.g., 13993020).

When she created a new worksheet as a test, the copy/paste worked the way one would expect.

Any help explaining what's going on here would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    Bill

when she pastes it into another cell on the same worksheet, she gets 1.4E+07
If the number is in say column B, hover your mouse at the top of the column between B and C until the cursor changes from an arrow pointing down to two arrows pointing left & right, then double-click your mouse button - all will be revealed
