    Matching Names to Tasks

    Hi,

I tried to post a little while ago but I think it was to difficult to understand what I was trying to do. I have lists of tasks in columns A, F, K, P, and T. Unfortunately, the lists are not in the same order or even of the same length. In the next two columns following each of those task columns, there are initials of people who worked on those tasks. I want excel to find if any people worked on the specific tasks did so every time it was listed. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Can you post a sample workbook showing what you mean and an example of an expected result?>

    Re: Matching Names to Tasks

    See attached for a suggestion..

If you can re-organize the 3 tables one under the other as per attached.. then add several helper columns (that can be hidden, if desired).

    So in J4:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
confirmed with Ctrl+Shift+Enter and copied down and across 3 columns.... this extracts all names associated to each object over the years.

    Then in M4:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
confirmed with Enter... this counts unique entries

In N4 (similar to J4 formula but extracts helpers):

Please Login or Register to view this content.
confirmed with Ctrl+Shift+Enter and copied down and across 3 columns.

    Formula Q4:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
    copied down

To gather relevant data, in H4:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
    copied down

    and in I4:

Please Login or Register to view this content.
    copied down.

Thanks! The only problem is, when I put in your formula into my sheet, it is returning "Main Builder" which is the header that is in cell C3...why is this? If I delete the {} around the formula, it does this too.

    Re: Matching Names to Tasks

Also, how are you getting the { } brackets?

You have to activate the formula and hold the CTRL+SHIFT keys down and hit ENTER.. the brackets will appear automatically.. You do not put them in manually!
